About the Know GMO Project
Collectively creating a GMO free society. One local food provider at a time.
Mission Statement:
We are dedicated to providing information for consumers and food providers on how we can collectively create sustainable, non-GMO changes in our local communities. We believe that in order to eliminate GMOs from our food supply it has to start with an elevated awareness from our local grocers, bakers, baristas, and restaurant owners.
By targeting local food providers, bakeries, restaurants, and coffee shops we can push GMOs off the market without having to go through government agencies and multinational corporations or by passing legislation.
Consumers drive the market. We have the power to drive GMOs off the market.
The “Know GMO Project” is a comprehensive campaign that is working to eliminate GMOs from our food supply by targeting “mid-level” food producers. These are our local bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and farmers.
If we can get our local businesses to change their practices and to source non-GMO foods, we can change the market place.
This meme generator is phase one of three of the Know GMO Project. We want you to express your thoughts about GMOs and share them with your friends to raise awareness. Our goal is to use this meme to broaden awareness so we can launch phase two.
Phase two is the roll out of the informational packets that consumers can take to their local food providers educating them about GMOs and why they should switch to non-GMO ingredients.
Act Up Media has partnered with members of GMO Free Idaho to create the Know GMO Project. GMO Free Idaho is a grassroots organization based in Boise, ID that is working to pass GMO legislation. Through their efforts, GMO Free Idaho has been able to get several local food providers to change their practices and to source non-GMO ingredients in their products.
When a local grocer, for example, calls PepsiCo, Frito Lay, and Hershey’s and says, “I’m sorry I can no longer source your products because they contain GMO ingredients,” it makes a huge impact! THIS is how we change what is in our food.
We want to provide information that makes it easy for consumers to ask their local producers to make the non-GMO switch and easy for food producers to understand and enact non-GMO changes.
Phase three will be revealed as time goes on and as we see results from all of your efforts.
Non-GMO food is a niche market and we predict that those who makes the changes NOW will be one step ahead of the game. Most of our local producers are unaware of GMO foods and by educating them, from our experience, they are responsive and willing to make these changes. After all, the consumer is what keeps food on the shelf!
Our future is GMO free, as long as we all KNOW GMO!
